Forever featuring Monique

This is a composition using song lyrics “Forever” with vocals by Monique from Vocal Forge. We do not know who Monique is, or who wrote the melody and/or lyrics. Basically what you get with the wave files/Kontakt Instruments is the key [in this case A minor] and the bpm [in this case 140 beats per minute]. Everything else is up to you as the composer: chords, phrasing, instruments, arrangement etc. Makes it a little challenging figuring out chords and phrasing that work with the singing, but it is nice working with some ‘real’ vocals.

This was also an opportunity to try Strum Electric by Applied Acoustic Instruments – in this instance using a virtual Fender Telecaster. Bass was from Independence Pro, while the drums were from JamStix.

Filed under: ambient,Composition,drums & bass,guitar,strings,Synth,woodwind — steve @ 12:19 pm

Just when you thought you had found what you were looking for it turns out that it wasn’t there, so you start looking again, and again… like one of those stress related dreams that go around and around in circles until you look down upon yourself and wonder just what it was that you were trying to find in the first place…

Monster Spirit

Filed under: alternative,Composition,drums & bass,guitar,piano,Synth,vocals — steve @ 7:19 pm

Sort of inspired by the Monkey series which I am watching at the moment – everything is either a spirit, a monster or a demon… A bit repetitive, but then again, so is Monkey…

Guitars, bass and rhodes piano from Independence 1.5; Synths from Proteus VX’ Vocals from Creative/Emu soundfonts; and, drims by JamStix…

Dancing with the Tazmanian Devil

Triplets over four-four timing makes it feel a bit like a waltz. The growling sound reminded me of the Tazmanian Devil. Hence, ‘Dancing with the Tazmanian Devil’ is what this is called.

Bass, Chimes and Clarinet from Independence 1.5; Synth Pads and growling sound from Proteus VX; Harp and Cello from Miroslav Philharmonik; and, Percussion from Jamstix 2.5…

Another ambient piece. For me, life is a series of computer-monitors placed strategically around me – they’re real…

Bass, guitar and arpeggiated thing from Independence; Synths from Proteus VX; Vocals from Miroslav Philharmonik as well as Creative-EMU sondfont banks; and, drums and percussion from Jamstix…

UPDATE: Have spent 2 days remixing and editing this piece – added just this [very late] evening the Irina Brochin soundfont – when you need a female vocalist to cut through then you can count on Irina! Much improved over the first draft – I really like this now…

Popped Gothic Rock

Taking a break from study for a few days to get the weird study related dreams out of my head. Tried out my new Miroslav Philharmonik VST and this is what came from it – a goth rock sort of thing for whatever reason – such is the nature of intuitive composing with no real direction to start with.

Male vocals and orchestral warm-up noises from Miroslav Philharmonik; guitars and basses from Independence 1.5; organ and synths from Proteus VX; female vocals from the wonderful Irina Brochin soundfont; and, drums by JamStix 2.5…

Sort of ambient, but not much, really… At a direct instruction teaching session yesterday, the Lecturer referred to students going to their happy place when zoning out in a lesson – no doubt something we all tend to do if bored and finding it difficult to concentrate on the task at hand…

Probably the last composition for a while now that uni has started up again – this is pretty much a totally arpeggiated piece except with bass and bass piano chords thrown in plus drums… next to no writing in this one except for the initial note progression – just wanted to see what Independence could do using 5 arpeggiated instruments…

An attempt at mangling sounds with arpeggiators, modulators, echo and the like. Kind of reminded me of the voices and crap inside your head when you are so very, very drunk that you are almost tripping like when drinking copious amounts of red wine on an empty stomach – not that I have done that for 20 years or more now…

Piano, Bass and Strings from Independence, drums by JamStix…

Suspensia

So, after 4 months of study, I get to compose some music again. This is a draft run of “Suspensia” – a track aimed at a thriller type movie. This draft contains some work by Ed Lynch – effectively the middle section.

Piano, guitar and bass by Independence 1.5, drums by Jamstix 2.5, vocals by EMU/Creative soundfonts.

UPDATE [June 11]: Remixed using “epicVerb” on the piano from http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/downloads/

Sounds quite good for no cost – better than the Cubase 1.0 reverb!

The title says it all – well, not really – another vocal rock thing…

UPDATE: [31-01-09] Added in Vocaloid2 Prima to the melody/vocals – not very clear, but neither is Prima and requires LOTS of work to get it sounding as if the vocalist is singing with the same levels of volume, brightness and sibilance… However I must relink the original as this is crap – flat notes, struggles to hit the mark – very disappointing vocal instrument that cost money…

Hmmm, don’t know about this one – started to come together then it didn’t and after a couple of days working on it I was over it in the end. Used up pretty much all the vocal sounds from the Creative/E-MU soundfonts collection I have hence more “Oh Yeah”s. Jamstix drums, bass, guitar and brass from Independence 1.5 – very little time put into the brass though as I just wanted this one to end… has its moments – perhaps incorporating obvious African male vocal sounds with American gospel/choir sounds with a 1950′s pop middle bit is not an ideal outcome… ;)

You Always Nag

Of course this has nothing to do with the ex wife…

The chord pattern I wrote in my 20s – sort of a jazzy thing with sustained 4ths, major 7ths and strange diminished 9ths, 5ths and 6ths – was very much into Larry Carlton, Steely Dan etc at the time – all those LA studio musos who really knew their stuff. The chord pattern was very demanding to play on guitar – very tiring and quite frenetic – so much easier with MIDI [sounds easier too - more relaxed]. What we end up with is a dialogue piece between flute and clarinet. All Independence 1.5 VST instruments here apart from [edited] Jamstix drums…

Shirtless theme

I have no idea what “Shirtless” is or will be – I assume it is a short film – however a friend, geoffrey.com.au/, who has entry level knowledge of music, although who has found a new passion to create music for his films, gave me a MIDI file of scratchings of some theme music. I really liked some of the ideas he had, (I hadn’t heard his version – just played the MIDI file) so I arranged the ideas, wrote bass and sax lines and then let Jamstix do its work (along with some editing)… Instruments from Independence 1.5 as well as the previously mentioned Jamstix… You can hear Ed’s original version here.

blah blah blah blah

Something I was toying around with before purchasing Garritan Personal Orchestra and Independence 1.5. Used a combination of sound fonts, free VST instruments and real drum loops. The real drum loops needed a lot of editing to get the timing right. I re-vamped the piece later with the Garritan VST as well as overlaying Jamstix drum VST over the drum loops. As a result it it is a bit of a “dog’s breakfast” sound wise
