Alien Nation

First composition for quite some time and the first using Cubase 5.5.2 64 bit on my new Win 7 64 bit PC – a fair bit of stuffing around trying to get older 32 bit VST and VSTi’s working…

So, here we are, ‘Alien Nation’: ’cause they’re due here after the world ends in 2012, don’t you know…

East West’s Voices of Passion, AAS String Studio & Entangled Species, Audio Damages Axon, HG Forune’s ScapesWizard Mini [free], and free 64 bit effects and processors VSTs [Compression, EQ, Stereo Enhancer, and Limiter] from Melda Production Audio Technologies – these made this track possible as TRacks [no 64 bit pluggins] DO NOT run at all well in Cubase 5.5.2 64 bit…

Anyhow, enjoy [11:30]

Monster Spirit

Filed under: alternative,Composition,drums & bass,guitar,piano,Synth,vocals — steve @ 7:19 pm

Sort of inspired by the Monkey series which I am watching at the moment – everything is either a spirit, a monster or a demon… A bit repetitive, but then again, so is Monkey…

Guitars, bass and rhodes piano from Independence 1.5; Synths from Proteus VX’ Vocals from Creative/Emu soundfonts; and, drims by JamStix…

(Looking for my) Happy Place

Sort of ambient, but not much, really… At a direct instruction teaching session yesterday, the Lecturer referred to students going to their happy place when zoning out in a lesson – no doubt something we all tend to do if bored and finding it difficult to concentrate on the task at hand…

Ban-DI from DSK; flute, bass, piano and kettledrums from Independence 1.5; synths from Proteus VX; and, percussion from JamStix…

Arpeggiated Anthem

Probably the last composition for a while now that uni has started up again – this is pretty much a totally arpeggiated piece except with bass and bass piano chords thrown in plus drums… next to no writing in this one except for the initial note progression – just wanted to see what Independence could do using 5 arpeggiated instruments…

All instruments from Independence 1.5 – drums from JamStix…

Sweet Dreams

Filed under: ambient,Composition,drums & bass,guitar,piano,vocals,woodwind — steve @ 1:53 pm

A rather repetitive piece but quite light and sweet – the kind of dreams you have that make you not want to get out of bed, ever.

All instruments plus arpeggiators from Independence 1.5 apart from Boy Choir and Irina_Brochin soundfonts – drums and percussion from JamStix…

Drunk & Dischordally

An attempt at mangling sounds with arpeggiators, modulators, echo and the like. Kind of reminded me of the voices and crap inside your head when you are so very, very drunk that you are almost tripping like when drinking copious amounts of red wine on an empty stomach – not that I have done that for 20 years or more now…

All instruments from Independence 1.5 except for the drums from JamStix…

Mole Skin

This is from a piano piece by Edwin Lynch (his version is here). He sent me the midi file of the piano and then I re-arranged it a little and added bass, bells, guitar and synths to it to produce this version below…

Piano, bass and guitar from Independence, bells from Halion, synths from ProteusVX, and drums from JamStix…

Not Waving, Drowning

So what if you were drowning and everyone just thought you were waving, so all they do is wave back, grinning? As you struggle to keep your head above water you drift out to sea before finally submerging into the depths below… not too comforting really…

Main flute [Ban-Di] from DSK, plus E-MU  soundfonts, synths from Proteus and flute and piano from Independence…

Acid Gibbon

Another sort of ambient piece… Why “Acid Gibbon”? I have no idea – it just seemed to be swinging too fast through the trees for a Sloth…

Electric Piano, Bass and Synths from Independence, Synths and bass from Proteus and drums by JamStix which once again kept on stuffing up and took out all my VSTs which meant they had to be reloaded and everything mixed again >|

Pianiarta

After JamStix kept on stuffing up and hogging the RAM I was finally able to record this draft piano piece (after successive re-starts and turning off start-up items) without excessive ASIO glitches popping throughout the composition – damn, Jamstix is a pain at times… Can’t wait for Cubase 5 with its multi-processor support… Might even buy a 3 gHz Quad processor as well…

Piano, Bass and Strings from Independence, drums by JamStix…

UPDATE [19-06]: Added string section from Independence – damn JamStix was a real pain in the butt this morning…

Not So Evil Piano

A kind of ambient piece that was originally going to be based around an evil piano – however it didn’t come out so evil afterall…

Rhodes Piano and Bass from Independence, Synth from E-Mu Proteus VX, and Drums by JamStix…

Suspensia

So, after 4 months of study, I get to compose some music again. This is a draft run of “Suspensia” – a track aimed at a thriller type movie. This draft contains some work by Ed Lynch – effectively the middle section.

Piano, guitar and bass by Independence 1.5, drums by Jamstix 2.5, vocals by EMU/Creative soundfonts.

UPDATE [June 11]: Remixed using “epicVerb” on the piano from http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/downloads/

Sounds quite good for no cost – better than the Cubase 1.0 reverb!

Atonal

Atonal [without tone or key - even though this is based loosely in C] is an intuitive expressionistic piece I ‘wrote’ in 1997/98. At the time I was using Emagic Notator Logic on a Macintosh [heaven forbid] and this piece was created by running the mouse cursor up and down a virtual keyboard – sounds easy but trying to recreate the procedure was not at all easy – in fact it was a down-right disaster! Anyways, I split the resulting MIDI file up and came up with this – one of my most favourite compositions of all time. So expressionistic was this piece that it fitted hand-in-glove with Edwin Lynch‘s “Psycho DA-DA” – coincidently also one of Anna Brockway‘s favourite short films of all time! :)

Anyhow, this is a re-recorded version (Jan. 2009) using Garritan Personal Orchestra (GPO). Was going to try Yellow Tool’s Independence 1.5 however that has no solo strings – and GPO sounds fine for fast pieces – not so good on long sustained/drawn notes though…

You Always Nag

Of course this has nothing to do with the ex wife…

The chord pattern I wrote in my 20s – sort of a jazzy thing with sustained 4ths, major 7ths and strange diminished 9ths, 5ths and 6ths – was very much into Larry Carlton, Steely Dan etc at the time – all those LA studio musos who really knew their stuff. The chord pattern was very demanding to play on guitar – very tiring and quite frenetic – so much easier with MIDI [sounds easier too - more relaxed]. What we end up with is a dialogue piece between flute and clarinet. All Independence 1.5 VST instruments here apart from [edited] Jamstix drums…

Grand

‘Grand’ was written around ten years ago – inspired by TV series theme music which, at the time, all seemed to sound the same as the TV series all seemed to be produced by the same person. Last month I gave it new life with Garritan Personal Orchestra (GPO) as I hadn’t purchased Independence at that stage. Have just tried some key-switching on the solo cello to see whether I could get more realism out of the cello – Independence is more believable sound wise however does not feature solo strings instruments but rather string sections, so GPO it had to be for this track… Piano from GPO as are the strings – the vocals are from a soundfont…

Shirtless theme

I have no idea what “Shirtless” is or will be – I assume it is a short film – however a friend, geoffrey.com.au/, who has entry level knowledge of music, although who has found a new passion to create music for his films, gave me a MIDI file of scratchings of some theme music. I really liked some of the ideas he had, (I hadn’t heard his version – just played the MIDI file) so I arranged the ideas, wrote bass and sax lines and then let Jamstix do its work (along with some editing)… Instruments from Independence 1.5 as well as the previously mentioned Jamstix… You can hear Ed’s original version here.

Chamber music for Celesta, Organ and Strings

A bit more of a descriptive title this time – was going to be called “G7″ but there wasn’t a lot of G7 in the composition… so, it is chamber music containing celesta, organ and full string section. Celesta from Garritan Personal Orchestra, everything else from Independence 1.5…

A minor/G

A composition that is kind of intended for the movie “3″ – it has an odd dischordant sound to it in parts before going into a simple A minor to G sequence. A middle section was added for contrast – a third phrase as such. Uses Independence 1.5 – love the sound of the ‘electric piano’ – very inspiring.

‘Three’ extended

Country-Bop

A twelve bar I wrote on piano in my teens – sometime back in the 1970′s. Finally ‘recorded’ some 30 years later using piano from Garritan Personal Orchestra as well as some other free VST instruments.
